Foster
Not ready to adopt, consider fostering. Airedale Rescue needs understanding, patient foster Moms and Dads to commit to fostering a dog until it is placed in a permanent home.
Fostering an Airedale is a lot of fun! It can also be learning experience, and the saving grace in an Airedale's life.
The purpose of fostering is to get to know the dog. We need to know if they are good with children, cats, other dogs, too enthusiastic for most people, get on furniture (a dog who is used to sleeping in bed should not be placed in a home where dogs are not allowed on the furniture), is an exceptionally sloppy drinker or is food aggressive, digs holes all over the yard, is a clinger or is aloof, is a kisser or is not, etc. Once we know the personality of the dog, we can find a home suitable for that particular dog. Understanding the dog and being able to communicate your findings can make a big difference helping an Airedale find a forever home that is the right fit.
What is required from you? Below is a summary. If you are interested in fostering, fill out the Foster Application. Let us know if you are available for short-term fostering on average 1-3 weeks or longer-term fostering involving possibly taking a dog to the vet, obedience training, or other rehabilitation activities.
- Previous Airedale ownership experience.
- Demonstrated responsible dog ownership.
- Ability to "let go" and say goodbye to your foster dog.
Any children living in your home or visiting more than once every six months must be 10 yrs. or older. This is a safety consideration for all. Most dogs that arrive in rescue have unknown histories. They may have been teased or abused. Most Airedales are excellent with children when brought up by loving families and even most rescue dogs will be fine with children, but it would be irresponsible to place a dog with an unknown history in a family with young children. It is impossible to keep dogs and children under supervision every moment of every day. A mistake in judgment could lead to a lifetime of trauma for the child and the parents and death for the dog. If you have young dog-experienced children, offer to visit with dogs in foster. Under your close supervision, you can help determine whether the dog would be good with children.
Almost all foster home applicants must have a fenced area attached to their home's back or side door. The fenced area is for the dog's safety and your convenience. A kennel run is usually not acceptable, but discuss this with the Airedale Rescue Volunteer nearest you. If you do not have a fenced area, you may still be eligible to foster, especially a senior dog. Please note that the Invisible Fence alone cannot be used for foster dogs - most Airedales will run through the boundary.
Your own dogs need to be at least tolerant of other dogs. We want to minimize the risk of fights.
Transport
Can’t foster, consider signing up for transport. The region we cover is approximately 1000 miles long and often we need volunteers that can help with transport or that can drive a leg or portion of the distance in order to retrieve an Airedale in need of rescue or take an Airedale to his/her new forever home.
Are you a pilot that volunteers in transporting rescue dogs? Our need is not frequent, but let us know if we can call on you occasionally.
Would you like to join us in this fulfilling activity? Do you have a car with a backseat and a doggy seatbelt or an SUV or station wagon with an area that might fit a crate large enough to house an Airedale and don’t mind driving two to three hours or more from time-to-time? Let us know.
Contact us either via email at c_cservenyak@yahoo.com or fill out our Contact form and let us know. We love to have the help and would be happy to talk to you in greater detail.
Donate
Your cash donation will be gratefully received and used only for rescue-related expenses. West Coast Airedale Rescue (WCAR) does not have paid staff. We are a group of volunteers who often use our own funds to help rescue Airedales.
WCAR is organized under the Airedale Terrier club of America (ACTA) National Airedale Rescue, which is a 501(c)(3). As such, donations via check to the address below or the donation button on this page and or on our Volunteer page are tax deductible.
Your donation of $10, $25, $50, or more, will make a big difference in our effort to rehabilitate and find homes for the Airedales we rescue. Please visit out Donate Page for information on how to donate.
